 Tentang, idea dan figura disebalik Disko Santan

Disko Santan is a young collective (not so young la sebab semua mostly in our 30s and married) who are collecting, buying, bidding, keeping, archiving the music physical (exp: vinyl, cassette, cds) and we love to play our records and sharing the moment with the people surround.

The idea started by one of our co-founder (@maliqmal) who started everything at his living room. We start play our records at his place, kadang-kadang kita just ada lepak session sambil layan record, talking about the pressing quality, record labels, band/artist discography, record shopping etc. 

 

One day there was an event need a dj, a vinyl dj to be exact. The organizer approced him and thats how we start. But some of us at that time ada yang dah start main kat tempat-tempat lain, tapi just for fun. So dia compile siapa yang ada that time, masa tu baru ada 7 orang then we go from there. Time pass by, kita add another 2 persons so sekarang dah jadi total 9 orang.

Kita cuba nak buang persepsi atau stereotype thinking orang kita, bila sebut dj atau selecta mesti diorang ingat music fengtau and disko rabak. Personally bagi aku, vinyl selecta dia lebih luas lagi sebab dia precise into kind of music,  eccentric and warm in term of sound. 

Each of the member have a various musical background, from funk to disco, electronic to downtempo, pop to rock, altenative-indie, punk to hc and hiphop to rnb. But since we know each other, easy to gel everyone in this collective. We were friends before Disko Santan started.

Pergerakan dan visi Disko Santan

To be exact kita go with the flow. At the mean time we play regularly at some places like Knowhere & Shelley Yu’s, Bangsar. We make this not only as a small income for the collective but at the same time this is how we can improve ourselves by play the record regularly.

Disko Santan juga organized an event and the currents are Pasar Saudagar, Guilty Pleasure, Public Pressure, Kongsi Jarum, YPP Party dan ada juga yang kita collaborate dengan other collective, for instance Santanica x Patina which will be held this early March. (2nd & 3rd). Semua various venue, any update boleh checkout kat ig @diskosantan .

Untuk event yang kita bikin ni kita cuba untuk established-kan dia sebab mungkin boleh jadi option untuk music/gig goer untuk layan music. Especially music on vinyl. Since kita ada 9 members, all the idea yg kita ada, kita cuba execute and made it possible, we do as details as possible, biar minimal bukan tangkap muat.

Kita juga collaborate dengan selecta & collective lain, locally and regionally (mainly SEA). Since the vinyl selecta scene is growing, this is the best time for us to make friend & connection domestic & international.

When we talk about vision, each of us might have our own, tapi mainly our vision is to play as many places as possible. Connecting people from various music background and countries. Educate people to appreciate physical stuff and last but not least maybe we can have our own space with full  discography, can be a store to sell stuff and place to play the records. My own vision, aku juga teringin nak spin all the local  band punya stuff, cuma buat masa ni tak banyak local band yang release on vinyl, aku harap benda ni one day boleh jadi kenyataan. This is my courtesy and respect to local band.

 Selain Malaysia, negara mana yang pernah Disko Santan sertai?

To date kita baru main kat 2 negara, Indonesia (Jakarta & Bali) dan Thailand (Bangkok). Looking forward nak main kat negara-negara lain pulak.

Anda (personally/Disko Santan) melihat muzik sebagai apa dan pandangan mengenai muzik Malaysia?

Personally, music is life. You are what you listen to. Sebab music tu bawa cara pergaulan kita, fikiran and fesyen. Setiap hari kita mesti dengar music dalam apa bentuk medium pun. Music is the way to express ourself. Music juga adalah medium untuk kita connect dengan orang dari berlainan tempat.

Pada aku music Malaysia ada growth rate dia yang tersendiri. Kita mungkin tak boleh nak lawan dengan negara jiran kita macam Indonesia, Thailand dan Singapore. Tapi from time to time ada benda yang kita lebih dari diorang. Mana yang kurang tu mungkin kita boleh belajar dari diorang.

Orang Malaysia sekarang dah banyak yang terbuka dalam menerima satu-satu jenis music sebab kita dah ada internet, kita boleh deeply research to get the info. Kemudahan macam ni kalau kita bijak gunakan memang banyak yang kita boleh explore and exposed cuma aku berharap untuk mainstream music kita akan datang maybe boleh hasilkan benda yang lebih berkualiti in terms of production, lagu dan lirik.

Boleh dengar melalui mixcloud. Kita juga ada plan nak bikin mixtape for each member, senang bila semua ada preference sendiri, work in progress dan sekiranya berminat untuk datangkan Disko Santan boleh DM via instagram atau emel ke diskosantansoundsystem@gmail.com
